Unique Program Connects Students to Skilled Trade Opportunities

Bloomberg Philanthropies has announced a $90 million initiative to provide opportunities for high school students to connect with skilled trade opportunities. Nine key U.S. regions, including Boston, Chattanooga, Detroit, Houston, Raleigh, Richmond, St. Louis, Washington D.C., and the state of New Jersey will serve as hubs where a total of 15,000 students can receive paid training and Registered Apprenticeships in various high-demand industries including electrical, plumping, HVAC, construction, carpentry, welding, and auto tech. Bloomberg Philanthropies has invested $570 million to-date in Career and Technical Education programs, including the creation of high schools around the nation that focus specifically on these high-wage, in-demand trade careers. As workers are hitting retirement age, in combination with the threat of AI and increasing college tuition costs, many teens are increasingly glimpsing into skilled trades as a solution to source a stable job. Research on Caimans in FL Prompts Need for Preventative Measures

University of Florida (UF) researchers have completed the first comprehensive review studying the spectacled caiman in South Florida, compiling more than seventy years of research. Results find that the caiman is more adaptable and spread out in the region than once previously thought, raising concerns about the potential of competing with native alligator and crocodile species. The study finds that the species has the possibility of affecting the Comprehensive Everglades Restoration Plan, the largest hydrologic and wetland restoration in U.S. history. Researchers emphasize the need to conduct additional research on the caimans to develop proactive measures. Future projects include satellite tagging of caimans to map nesting areas and integrating DNA information to find new populations. Read more here.

Screwworm Reemergence and Agricultural Implications

The reemergence of the screwworm in the southern U.S. is raising concerns across the agricultural sector regarding economic impacts on livestock production and interstate trade. The parasite, which primarily affects cattle and other animals through open wounds, was eradicated from the U.S. decades ago but has recently been detected in Texas. While USDA officials emphasize that the outbreak does not threaten safety of the meat supply, the livestock industry could face increased vet costs, number losses, movement restrictions, and additional biosecurity measures if the pest develops. In response, the USDA has expanded inspections, implemented quarantines, and resumed sterile fly release programs (previously eradicated the screwworm). Experts note that rapid containment will be critical to minimize impacts on production, supply chains, and rural economies. Read more here.

Washington Connects with Quebec and California Carbon Markets

Following a Cap-and-Invest carbon market analysis done by the Washington State Department of Ecology (Ecology) earlier this year, the state has moved to make official market connection efforts with their neighbors. Amongst technical adjustments such as deadlines and allowances, the linkage will also transform the Washington market via more stable carbon allowances, greater and more effective greenhouse gas reductions, and more predictable investment opportunities for businesses. The official agreement is slated to take place later in 2026 and operations between the shared markets are expected to begin in 2027. Read more here.

Florida Program Tests Transforming Sewage into Energy and Clean Water

Altamonte Springs, FL has begun testing a program to reconstruct human waste into energy and clean water. Funded by FDEP, the city uses hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL), applying extreme heat and pressure to sewage to convert biosolids into oil, gas, and water with 96% less forever chemicals. These transformed energy sources can help power city generators. With broken down forever chemicals, water from the HTL process can be utilized in data centers, helping fight water shortage issues stemming from increased demand. Alongside cooling usage, HTL-produced water can be used in the city’s pureALTA program, converting it into clean drinking water. The city is set to submit a final report by the fall, with potential for further regional impact. Read more here.

Environmental Program Details from FL Budget

Previously, TBG explored high-level allocations from Florida's latest budget; today, we are diving deeper into funding for specific environmental programs. The new budget did not provide any new funding for Florida Forever, a program that is fundamental for buying and protecting natural land, especially within the Florida Wildlife Corridor and which could provide park and conservation areas for the public. Unused but previously allocated funds were rechanneled into $425 million for the Rural and Family Lands Protection Program, which protects farmland but remains private. $500 million was given to the Everglades Restoration Project and $50 million was given to springs restoration, which is the minimum amount required by law for springs protection. Various environmental bills are still in the legislative process. Read more about the status of the bills along with the funding breakdown here.

Data Visualization of the Week

City Economic and Industrial Growth Linked in a Global Dataset

The data visualization of the week takes a global perspective, highlighting cities with populations exceeding 100,000 and combining two metrics: nitrogen dioxide emissions (NO2) and gross domestic product (GDP) per capita. The underlying study analyzed the cities to create an indicator of economic activity associated with fossil-fuel uses common for industrial growth. The study analyzed around 2,500 cities between 2019 and 2024 and grouped them into four categories, with green symbols indicating a decrease in NO2 and an increase in GDP, red showing an increase in NO2 and a decrease in GDP, black showing a decrease in NO2 and GDP, and brown showing an increase in NO2 and GDP. The data visualization also allows for the user to find a specific city (Paris used as an example) and see how their NO2 and GDP have changed overtime. View here.
